Valentine Stuffed Hearts and A COLD Kentucky Week

ice stormThe last week has been about the coldest week I can ever remember… but maybe that’s because we lost our power here in Kentucky.  Brrrr!!!

If you’ve been watching the news, you probably heard the news that a HUGE snow/sleet/ice storm blew through my neck of the woods last week.  We lost power at our house on Tuesday night and spent two days in below zero conditions.  (luckily, our house held the heat pretty well the first two days and it didn’t dip below zero until the second day!)

As we were about to pack up the kids and move to a hotel to wait out the power (it was just too cold to stay here), my husband lucked into finding a generator (a long story… but he just happened to be in the right place at the right time.  I think it was divine intervention!).

We hooked up the heat and waited it out until the power went back on Saturday night.  Boy did we have a lot of laundry to do!!!

Anyway, let’s just say that I have a new appreciation for all our modern conveniences… especially electricity!

Valentine Suffed Heart CraftEnough about me… here’s another cute little Valentine craft for kids of all ages.

These little stuffed hearts are a nifty little Valentine craft. Kids love them, you can make them simple or more complicated, they are made out of recycled materials, and they are just plain fun.

What You’ll Need:

  • Lunch sized paper bag
  • Newspaper
  • Red acrylic paint
  • Scissors
  • Stapler
  • Paint brush

What to Do:

1. Cut out two identical hearts from the paper bag.

The way we did it was to cut the bottom of the bag off, and then cut down one side to make a large sheet. Then we cut the paper in half, put the two halves together and folded them in half. This way we could cut two identical hearts at the same time by cutting a half heart on the fold.

2. Put the two hearts together and staple all the way around them, leaving a three inch (more or less) space open on one side. This will make a little pocket.

The staples should line up close together about a quarter of an inch from the edge of the paper. This doesn’t have to be exact, but it looks better when it’s pretty uniform.

3. Crumple up pieces of newspaper and put them through the hole you left in the staples. Do this until the heart is as stuffed as you want it to be. When you’re satisfied, staple the hole closed.

4. Paint both sides of your stuffed heart with red acrylic paint. You may want to paint one side, let it dry, then paint the other to make it less messy.

Variations:

There are a lot of things you can do to this basic craft to make it more pretty or useful…

  • Write a love note on it and present it to your special Valentine.
  • Dip your hand in white paint and stamp your hand print on the heart.
  • Decorate the heart with other objects like buttons, beads, glitter, gems, paper, etc.
  • Staple in a piece of yarn when you’re joining the two hearts to make a hanger.

Been there before. I live very close to Lake Huron so I have seen many winters like that. It is surprising that you would get weather like that.

Its funny reading your story and glad you survived it well and had some luck fall your way. I am in Melbounre Australia and we have just expreience the extreme opposite to you with record high temperatures some areas 114 degrees. Loss of power in alot of areas. It does make you appreciate things.

Love you craft cant wait to make this one with my girls.
Thanks for all your great ideas. keep them coming

I was living in the mountains of North Carolina when we had a blizzard hit back in 1994. We were without power for 2 weeks. Buried all our food in the snow to keep it cold – cos the fridge quit – and luckily had a wood burning stove as backup. We also had a creek nearby where we could get water. Like you, we had a ton of laundry to catch up on. Glad to hear things turned out well for you! You’re right – it was divine intervention. I believe we survived for the same reason as some of our neighbors didn’t fare as well. I love your attitude towards things! Thanks for the great ideas – use them all the time with my preschool class! God bless! Diane

Chris,
Glad you got the power back. I live in TN. I’ve been praying for all you folks north of us.
Our town had a lot of business this past week, due to folks staying in the hotels.
I never saw the like.
My pre-k students enjoy your craft ideas. They love making crafts. Great for fine motor skills.
Take care and stay WARM.

Your storm sounds amazing. Here on the otherside of the world (New Zealand) we are at the other end of the scale we are having a very hot summer by our standards (into the mid 30s) and the hills around my town are looking very dry.
I have just discovered your website over the last couple of weeks and can’t wait to have a good go at some of your projects. I have a 3 month old baby plus two older children (2 and a half and 6 years old) so when I have some time they will be great projects to try together

Chris,
I know how you feel!! Our power went out Christmas Day of 2000 here in Texas. Everyone calls it the 2000 Ice Storm. It was out for a week, but others went much longer. My family had to go to my mom and dad’s, along with about 10 other family members because my mom and dad had gas logs that kept their house warm. My mom jokes that when she invited the family over for Christmas she didn’t realize they would stay for a week!! We actually ended up having a lot of fun, but it was great when the lights came back on!! Glad all is well with you.

Hi Chris
I live in Central Victoria Australia and we have the exact opposite to you causing ‘power outages’. Been well over 40 degrees here for some time now.
Keep well, regards, Trish from Australia
