Hey Val,

It looks like the lanyards are folded over the top of the keyring itsef before you start braiding. The ring at the top is where you put your keys on.

You could also do one of these on a different type of clip like a zipper pull clip if you want something different.

I remember making one of these when I was a kid, and you're right... we used to call them lanyards. "Rexlace" is probably the name of the product that they sell at hobby lobby - the originator of this craft page.
