Last Minute St. Patrick’s Day Crafts

March 14, 2008

Since we’re getting so close to St. Patty’s, I thought you might be able to use some last minute St. Patrick’s Day craft ideas for this weekend. I’ve had a couple of people email me about whether the holiday is to be celebrated on the 15th or the 17th… so here’s what I know:

St. Patrick’s Day is usually on March 17th. However, this year the 17th is in conflict with Holy Monday. Therefore, the Roman Catholic Church changed it to the 15th. (Here are a couple of links for more information: http://www.catholicnewsagency.com/new.php?n=9917 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Patrick’s_Day ) However, it looks like not everyone is following the Pope on this one because a subscriber sent me this link: http://www.stpatricksday.ie/cms/home.html

So, I hope you have some good “green” fun on whatever day you decide to observe!

Here are some quick and easy, spur of the moment, not a lot of supplies needed (boy that was a mouthful) crafts…

Pot of Gold - Cut a paper plate in half and then cut a half circle from the middle to make a large “C”. With markers, color the “C” to look like a rainbow. Paint a dixie cup black. Let dry. Put one end of your rainbow into the dixie cup and glue in place. Make a ball of newspaper and fit it inside the cup. Squirt glue on the top of the newspaper and then sprinkle gold glitter or gold sequins on top to make the “gold” at the end of the rainbow.

Shamrock Hatband - Make a simple hatband from green construction paper. Cut out some shamrocks and glue them around the band… that’s it! You can use this template for a large shamrock to glue onto the headband, or simply draw your own on construction paper. Super easy and the kids love hats!

Green on Green - A fun project to do with kids that are a little bit older (my four year old loved this). Use a green crayone to draw a picture or design on green construction paper. Make sure the crayon is pretty heavy. Brush white tempura paint over the picture to reveal the “magic” picture.

3D Paper Rainbow Craft - This one is really easy… simply print the template, color, cut out, and put together. My five year old thought this one was really “cooool.”

Shamrock Pins - A really clever idea… a shamrock pin made from green lollipops! I wish I would have thought of that. I think we’re going to try to make these this weekend so the kids can wear them to school on Monday. I’m a little worried about the safety pin staying put though. I’m also thinking about trying to melt the lollipops slightly in the oven to get them to stick together… like when you make stained glass cookies… but I’m not sure it that will work.

By the way, I’ve put a new little widget at the bottom of all the posts so that you can bookmark the crafts you like easier… it’s the “Share This” icon below. Hope you like it!

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

    Hi,

I have been using many of your crafts at my Intergenerational Playgroup now for a couple of years now and they are just fabulous. I get many comments about how clever I am to think up such wonderful things for the kids to do and the Elders to help them with. I just thought I’d write and say thanks for all your help!!

    Cheers, Meg

Got something to say?
